Homeowners and renters in big cities often have to settle for small rooms. These compact spaces can pose a challenge when it comes to having a functional yet aesthetic design. But a pared-down room need not look small. Get inspired by our creative styling tricks to maximize any small space.

Wallpaper and paint

Soft wallpaper prints and neutral colors, especially white, deflect more light and give the room a larger feel. Earthy tones reduce the appearance of clutter and provide a neutral canvas for you to work with. Before you pick up the paint roller, do test out patches of beige and cream and read on for how you can incorporate them with contrasts. Opt for sheer curtains or roller blinds to ensure maximum light inside the room.

Adding contrast

Adding dark contracting colors to your room might seem confusing and going against what we’ve said about sticking to soft tones. But contrary to popular belief, dark colors don’t have to be excluded, you just have to get creative with how you use them.

Try painting or using wallpaper on smaller sections of your room that can give your room more depth. Finish your contrast walls with a satin or gloss finish, so it reflects light, adding the appearance of space.

If you don’t want to commit to any contrasting colors, try one, large attractive painting that can act as the focal point and draw attention.

Make your ceilings a feature

Who looks at a ceiling when they walk into the room? You’re right! Normally, you wouldn’t pay a lot of attention to it even when designing your room. But ceilings can be a lot more than just a place for your light fixture. Create an illusion that draws the eyes upwards and maximize the use of space available to you. Try using bold wallpaper or grand, contrasting light fixtures to draw attention.

If you are unable to find something that makes your ceiling pop out, then try accentuating the height of your room when floor to ceiling tiling, tall shelves, or long contrast colored drapes.

Mirrors are magicians

When it comes to the illusion of space, mirrors are magicians. Mirrors reflect any light and when strategically placed can make a room give a sense of openness. Place the mirror behind the source of light so it can reflect it. Opt for slim frames on your mirror to maximize the reflection. If you don't have a mirror, any reflective surface such as stainless steel, glass doors and metallic accessories will do the job.

Opt for multipurpose and moveable furniture

Sofabeds and storage ottomans are all clever ways of using one piece of furniture for multiple purposes. They are a great way of creating storage without increasing the number of furniture pieces you have in your room.

Furniture on wheels is a great way to create space when you need to. Movable kitchen islands are a great example. You can always have the island when hosting or during breakfast but move it to serve another purpose at another time.

There you have it! Now you’ll never complain of your space being too small to be designed well.  These tricks will ensure your room looks bigger, beautiful, and functional at the same time.
